Defense mechanisms in the ‘burbs

Heading out to the truck through the garage door, I find my kids standing still, bent over, staring at the ground. “What’s that?!” asks Annaliese. “Oh, its a roly poly bug(we used to call them armadillo bugs). If you touch it, it will roll into a ball”. So I touched it and it rolled into a ball. Apparently this is its defense mechanism. So we piled into the truck, took Maddie to school and came home.

And walking back into the garage, I see a smooshed roly poly bug who was no match for our garage door which landed squarely on top of him when I closed it. So much for the defense mechanism. Not very helpful if you’re a bug in the suburbs. Garage door 1, roly poly 0.
